Over the past year, Pastor Sue Tjornehoj has been exploring the history of the immigrant Lutherans’ entry into the lands of the White Earth Nation in Northern Minnesota in order to tell the story.
The archivist at Luther Seminary described this untold story as a glaring absence. Through interviews, congregational histories, driving the landscape and conversations with residents and local clergy around White Earth, articles and discussions with Indigenous leaders, Pastor Sue has begun to write a narrative of resilience and absence, with a few hunches, of two peoples, immigrants/displaced people from Norway and Sweden, Denmark and places north establishing new homes in a strange land among another displaced people often unseen and unnoticed.
Come explore with her this story of Minnesota, its first people and these immigrant Lutherans, a story painful and liberating, mystifying and filled with possibility.
