Worship (10:30 AM Contemporary) “Resentment”
Text: Matthew 18:21-35 “Not forgiving is like drinking rat poison and waiting for the rat to die,” writes Anne Lamott. We may think ourselves beyond generous to forgive someone seven times but Jesus challenges our thinking by saying, “not seven times but seventy-seven times.” In other words, for those of us who follow Christ, forgiveness becomes not so much an act but a way of life. How are we equipping ourselves to face this giant of resentment?

Even while God is equipping us to “do all things through Christ who strengthens [us],” Jesus warns us that “life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.” How do we measure our success and have we ever “arrived” or does God call us to deeper purposes than success as our world defines it?

The God of peace asks us to be reconciled with our brothers and sisters even before we come before the Lord in worship. Wasn’t it peace that Jesus was showing us in his death on the cross? How is God calling us to transform our anger into something life-giving before we do and say things that we later regret?
