Covenant and Care

God Calls Samuel

In The Greatest Story, God calls ordinary people to listen, speak, and serve. Young Samuel hears God calling in the night and responds, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” Generations later, Jesus sends his disciples into the world, saying, “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” God’s covenant and care continue through people of every generation who listen for God’s voice and discover who God is calling them to become for the sake of others.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Loving God,
You call each of us by name and you send us out to a world in need. Help us to respond to you as Samuel did: with open and willing hearts that are ready to do your will, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
