God Calls Samuel

October 11, 2026

Primary Reading:

1 Samuel 3:1–21

Gospel Connection:

John 20:21–23

THE STORY

In an age when ‘the word of the LORD was rare,’ the boy Samuel hears God calling in the night and receives a hard first message to deliver.

BACKGROUND

The chapter opens on spiritual darkness: visions are rare, and the aging priest Eli’s sons are quite different from their father. They have corrupted the sanctuary. Into this silence God speaks — to a child. Samuel doesn’t recognize the voice; it takes an elder’s guidance to teach him to answer, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.’ Notice the deeply relational, communal shape of the call: Samuel learns to hear God with Eli’s help, within a community. And God’s initiative is total — Samuel doesn’t seek this word; it seeks him. The word of the LORD, so rare at the start, becomes reliable and near by the end because God chooses to speak.

MAKING THE CONNECTION

John 20:21–23 is the risen Jesus commissioning his disciples: ‘As the Father has sent me, so I send you,’ breathing the Holy Spirit on them. Like Samuel, they are sent with a word that is not their own. We hear a wide call here: the Spirit is given to the whole gathered community, and God still calls the young, the unlikely, and the unqualified — women and men alike — to speak and serve.

OUR STORY | GOD'S STORY

Our Story: We can become distracted by noise, uncertainty, or fear, making it hard to recognize God’s voice.
God’s Story: God Keeps speaking. Through Scripture, the Spirit, and the community of faith, God calls us by name and invites us to follow.

DIGGING DEEPER

  1. Samuel needs Eli’s help to recognize God’s voice. Who has helped you learn to listen for God? Whom might you help?
  2. God speaks to a child, not the established priest. What does that say about whom God calls — and does it stretch your expectations?
  3. The whole community, not just clergy, is sent and given the Spirit ( John 20). How does that shape your
    sense of your own calling?
  4. What practices help you get quiet enough to hear God amid the noise?

GOING FURTHER — CROSS-REFERENCES

  • 1 Samuel 16:7 — God sees the heart
  • John 10:27 — ‘my sheep hear my voice’
  • Jeremiah 1:4–10 — a young prophet called
  • Acts 2:17–18 — the Spirit poured out on all

THIS WEEK’S PRACTICE

Build in five minutes of silence each day this week, opening with Samuel’s words: ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.’ Listen without needing to produce anything — the call comes from God’s side.

PRAYER

Speaking God, in a noisy and distracted age, give us Samuel’s open ear and willing heart. Thank you that you call the young and unlikely, and that you send your whole people out with your Word and Spirit. Amen.

FOR ALL AGES

Take this week deeper at home and in ministry — for children, middle school, and high school

CHILDREN

younger kids · read-aloud

Read together: Spark Story Bible:God Calls Samuel on pg. 122. To read the full passage, use the Spark Bible (NRSV): 1 Samuel 3.

The Story for Kids: One night, young Samuel kept hearing his name. With Eli’s help, he learned it was God, and he answered, ‘Speak, Lord, I’m listening.’ God chose to speak to a kid — God can call anyone!

I Wonder...

  • I wonder what it would be like to hear God call your name.
  • I wonder how we can listen for God today.
  • I wonder who helps you learn about God, like Eli helped Samuel.

Try This: Play a listening game: sit quietly for one minute and count every sound you hear. Then talk about listening for God.

Remember: “Speak, Lord, I’m listening. — from 1 Samuel 3:10”

MIDDLE SCHOOL

grades 6–8 · discuss & apply
Read: 1 Samuel 3:1–21 (Spark Bible NRSV); connect with John 20:21–23.

Talk About It:

  • Samuel needed Eli’s help to recognize God’s voice. Who helps you understand God?
  • God chose to speak to a kid. What does that say about who God calls?
  • Jesus sends the whole group of disciples, giving them the Spirit. How does it feel that God calls ordinary people like you?

Live It Out: Try five minutes of quiet a few times this week, starting with ‘Speak, Lord, I’m listening.’ You don’t have to perform — just listen.

HIGH SCHOOL

grades 9–12 · wrestle & respond
Read: 1 Samuel 3:1–21; John 20:21–23. Optional: Acts 2:17–18.

Go Deeper:

  • God takes the initiative — the word seeks Samuel, not the other way around. Where do you see God pursuing rather than waiting to be earned?
  • In the ELCA, the Spirit is given to the whole community, and God calls the young and unlikely — women and men alike. How does that shape your sense of calling?
  • How do you tell God’s voice from the noise of everything else competing for your attention?

Live It Out: Pick one practice to quiet the noise this week. Listen for where God might be calling you to serve — right where you already are.

Word of the Week: LISTEN

God called Samuel by name, and Samuel learned to listen. This week, watch for opportunities to listen - to God, to others, and to the quiet moments that often reveal what matters most.
