Jacob’s Dream
September 20, 2026
Primary Reading:
Genesis 27:1–4, 15–23; 28:10–17
Gospel Connection:
John 1:50–51
THE STORY
Jacob secures his father’s blessing through deception and flees for his life. Alone in the wilderness, he dreams of a ladder joining earth and heaven and receives God’s promise.
BACKGROUND
Jacob is the patriarch we might least expect God to bless — a schemer whose name means ‘he grasps the heel’ or ‘supplants.’ He steals the blessing, then runs. And it is precisely there, in flight and guilt, with a stone for a pillow, that heaven opens. This is one of the clearest pictures of grace in Genesis: God does not wait for Jacob to become worthy but meets him mid-mess and freely repeats the promise. ‘Surely the LORD is in this place — and I did not know it’ (28:16). God’s initiative comes before Jacob’s response; the blessing is announced, not earned.
MAKING THE CONNECTION
Jesus quotes this scene to Nathanael: ‘you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man’ (John 1:51). Jesus names himself the ladder — the meeting place of heaven and earth. What Jacob glimpsed in a dream stands before Nathanael in the flesh. Access to God is not a stairway we climb by effort; it is a person God gives.
OUR STORY | GOD'S STORY
Our Story: We try to secure our future through our own efforts, and we carry the guilt and consequences of our failures.
God’s Story: God meets us where we are - not after we earned it, but right in the middle of our mess - and promises never to leave us.
DIGGING DEEPER
- God blesses Jacob right after his worst behavior, with no lecture first. What does that reveal about how grace actually works?
- Jesus calls himself the ladder between heaven and earth. How is it Gospel that we reach God through a person God gives, rather than a ladder we climb?
- Why do you think God so often shows up in wilderness and exile rather than in comfort and success?
- Where might God be present in a ‘this place’ in your life that you’ve overlooked?
GOING FURTHER — CROSS-REFERENCES
- Genesis 25:29–34 — Jacob and the birthright
- John 14:6 — Jesus as the way to the Father
- Ephesians 2:8–9 — grace, not our own doing
- Psalm 139:7–12 — nowhere beyond God’s presence
THIS WEEK’S PRACTICE
Pick one ordinary ‘in-between’ place this week — a commute, a waiting room, a sleepless night — and treat it as possible holy ground. You don’t have to make it holy; simply watch for the God who is already there.
PRAYER
God of Jacob, you bless the undeserving and open heaven over the runaway. Meet us in our wilderness places, and thank you for Christ, the ladder we could never build, who joins earth to heaven for us. Amen.
FOR ALL AGES
Take this week deeper at home and in ministry — for children, middle school, and high school
CHILDREN
younger kids · read-aloud
Read together: Spark Story Bible: This specific story the adults read isn’t in the SPARK Story Bible, but to read a little bit about who Jacob is, check out Jacob Wrestles on pg. 46. or to find the full story use the Spark Bible (NRSV): Genesis 32-22-31.
The Story for Kids: Jacob has an encounter with someone, who turns out to be God. He receives a blessing from him, and it makes him very happy. J
I Wonder...
- I wonder how Jacob felt when he knew he had wrestled with God?
- I wonder how it would feel to receive God’s blessing. .
- I wonder how we can bless each other? .
Try This: Bless your family members or stuffed animals, make a sign of the cross on their forehead and say “Jesus loves you and so do I” .
Remember: “God is with me everywhere. — from Genesis 28:15”
MIDDLE SCHOOL
grades 6–8 · discuss & apply
Read: Genesis 28:10–17 (Spark Bible NRSV); connect with John 1:50–51.
Talk About It:
- God blesses Jacob right after he messed up, with no lecture. What does that show about grace?
- Jesus calls himself the ladder to heaven. How is it good news that God gives us the way to him, instead of us climbing?
- Where might God be present that you usually don’t notice?
Live It Out: Pick one ordinary place this week and treat it as possible holy ground. You don’t have to make it holy — just watch for God already there.
HIGH SCHOOL
grades 9–12 · wrestle & respond
Read: Genesis 27:1–4, 15–23; 28:10–17; John 1:50–51. Optional: Ephesians 2:8–9.
Go Deeper:
- Grace comes to Jacob before any change on his part. Does ‘grace before you clean up your
act’ bother you or free you? - Jesus is the ladder God provides — access to God as a gift, not achievement. How does that
cut against a ‘work your way up’ mindset - Why do you think God so often shows up in exile, failure, or the in-between rather than
in success?
Live It Out: Where are you trying to earn approval — from God, parents, coaches, peers? Name one place to practice receiving grace instead of performing for it.
Word of the Week: PRESENCE
This week, look for the reminders of PRESENCE. Maybe it’s a quiet moment, a beautiful sunset, an encouraging conversation, or someone who showed up just when you needed them.
